Here, listen to the infamous adventurer Giacomo Casanova (1725-1798) on a cool summer night in 1755, right before his imprisonment, allegedly for “immoral behavior”:

"At Erbaria, a flower and fruit market in daytime, where one goes for a stroll after card games and parties, the Venetians of old, mysterious in politics and in chivalry, are obliterated by contemporary Venetians whose predominant taste is that of making no mystery of anything…

"One goes to the Erbaria more to be seen than to see, and the women love it more than the men: they want the world to know that they are not embarrassed. Each man, each woman must see in the other the marks of disorder: the men must display the boredom of an overused complacency, and the women must parade the debris of an old toilet that has not been respected..."
